There is also a short list of materials to avoid as they will lead to rotting, odors, and could attract rodents. Also note that the vermicomposting process will not kill seeds. Because of this if you add weeds into the bin, their seeds could end up in the finished vcompost.

As you feed the bin with organic materials it is important to ensure you consistently add enough bedding materials to keep the bin healthy. Bedding is not only needed to bury your organics in, it is also critical to creating the correct moist yet airy environment to keep the worms happy.

Bedding needs to be shredded to allow for airflow, this can normally be done by hand. Bedding should also be moistened to create the correct bin environment. Adding drier bedding can help if the bin is too wet, or wetter bedding can help add moisture to the bin.
